Reflections Journal Week 1
Week 1:
This week has been an interesting one as I have begun the journey of learning more about Social innovation and what it is. As I have been reading and watching videos on the subject for this week I was very surprised that I actually knew more about social innovation than I gave myself credit for. I didn't realize individuals like Bill Gates, Muhat Magandi, and Peter Drucker were called social innovators. I didn't realize how much Entrepreneurs play a part in Social Innovations through out the world. It is projects like the Tilapia Farms in Ghana that have brought food to many individuals in that country, saving multiple lives and families as well.

I think that one of the things that stood out to me the most was learning more about Peter Drucker and the fact that he is a Social Innovator and Entrepreneur. I actually am going to have to pull out my books that I have read from and re-read them again. The one thing that stuck out to me while reading the article "The Meaning of "Social Entrepreneurship"", Drucker states, "He does not require
entrepreneurs to cause change, but sees them as
exploiting the opportunities that change (in
technology, consumer preferences, social norms,
etc.) creates. He says, this defines entrepreneur
and entrepreneurship the entrepreneur always
searches for change, responds to it, and exploits it
as an opportunity. The notion of opportunity has come to be central to many current definitions
of entrepreneurship.". I like this definition of entrepreneurship and I look forward to one day owning a business that can help lead the charge for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship throughout the world to help with making it a better place.
One of the things that sticks out to me as to why Social Innovation is more prevalent today, is due to the increase in Entrepreneurs in the world. Also, more and more people today are looking for the root causes of issues instead of just dealing with the big picture they can accomplish more this way in solving those problems than having our focus be so broad. The High School and College aged kids of today don't want to work in an office 9-5. THey would rather have a more flexible schedule so that they can have time to develop those ideas that we have seen come out of the back of garage or from someone just tinkering with Electronics. We are also being forced more and more to pay attention to the economy, the environment, and other world issues as they have been declining for years now.
